Commission

Create a speculative car concept and branding for a futuristic era.

DECAls
modeling

Rally racing decals are the inspiration for the 2D components of the car. The plastering of a variety of logos over the entire surface of the car, the bold colors, and streamlined design directed the look, as speed is such a strong facet of a sci-fi future.

Branding for a car company was achieved after some exploration (right). I settled on the name Io, one of Jupiter's moons, as the name of the company and approached the execution of the final render through an advertising eye.

For branding, a style sheet was created to present logo, colors, typography, and general elements.

This project began with a simple sketch. A vintage looking body heightened by the addition of a rocket boost exhaust, tying the vintage and futuristic together. Spaceships and science-fiction go hand in hand, so I figured I would try to combine the two for a car concept with a spaceship aesthetic. At this point, my idea had the potential to add an element of fiction, fun, and adventure to the simple commuting purpose of car travel.

On another note, hypothetically, car bodies could be repurposed as the container to the flying car's mechanical components. A concept for such a device is currently brewing in my mind...

objective

Meshes and UV maps are presented below. Keep in mind that small details have been changed since (camera angle, windows, etc.).

TEXTURING

From this point, UV unwrapping was possible and initial textures could be applied. I also began to play with a few different render setups.

rendering & compositing

Finally, I settled on one glory shot and slowly improved on it. From the white background (above) I wanted to improve my lighting and mood.

Moons are dark and foreign places, justifying the charcoal color. The simple light design highlights the car in a contrasting, warm color.

The first render was flat and unexciting (top left). I added dust particles for depth (top right), which are almost reminiscent of stars. My post processing consisted of adding slight noise, a faint glow, and low camera distortion.

Lastly, I created a separate branding for the final advertisement after playing with fonts and taglines. The font started to overpower the scene's design (bottom). In the final piece, I decided to go for a mid-space-y font and a two word combo.
